Free streaming sites can be perfectly safe to use — if you take basic precautions. This checklist consolidates all of our safety advice into a single, actionable list. Print it, bookmark it, or save it. Review it before trying any new streaming site.
Before You Stream: Setup Checklist
- Ad blocker installed and active — uBlock Origin is our recommendation. See our setup guide. This is the single most important step.
- Browser updated to latest version — Check for updates now. See our browser guide for recommendations.
- Antivirus software active — Windows Defender (built into Windows) is sufficient for most users. Make sure real-time protection is enabled.
- VPN active (optional but recommended) — See our VPN guide for when this matters.
- Site checked on our safety page — Visit our Safety Check page to see the latest safety analysis for sites in our directory.
While Streaming: Behaviour Rules
- Never download anything. No codecs, no players, no plugins, no extensions. Legitimate streaming sites never ask you to download software to watch a video.
- Never enter personal information. Streaming sites do not need your email, phone number, credit card, or any other personal data.
- Close suspicious pop-ups immediately. If a pop-up claims your computer is infected, that you have won a prize, or that you need to update something, close it. These are scams.
- Check the URL. Make sure you are on the correct site. Fake streaming sites often use slightly misspelled domain names to trick users.
- Do not click outside the video player. Many streaming sites place invisible overlays on the page that open ads when clicked. Click directly on the player's play button, not on empty space around it.
Red Flags: When to Leave Immediately
Close the tab and do not return if a site:
- Asks you to install a browser extension to watch content.
- Requires you to complete a survey or offer before watching.
- Displays a fake virus warning with a phone number.
- Redirects you to a different site when you try to close a pop-up.
- Asks for payment information for "verification."
- Opens multiple windows or tabs without your interaction.
For more on identifying scam sites, read How to Spot Fake Streaming Sites.
After Streaming: Maintenance
- Clear cookies periodically. Streaming sites can use cookies to track your viewing habits.
- Check browser extensions. Occasionally review your installed extensions and remove any you do not recognise.
- Update filter lists. If you use uBlock Origin, update its filter lists periodically to catch newly-identified advertising domains.
- Report problems. If you encounter malicious ads or suspicious behaviour on a site in our directory, report it.
The Bottom Line
Free streaming is not inherently dangerous. With an ad blocker, an updated browser, and common sense, the risk is minimal. The sites in our directory are regularly checked for safety, and our safety page provides detailed analysis for each one.
